Making Moves

Exercise: EX - ER - CISE, noun: An activity requiring physical effort, carried out especially to sustain or improve health and fitness. 

Exercise is what we as humans need continue doing to maintain our health. When you exercise you feel better because your brain and body are working hard. Your heart rate and blood pressure goes down, which decreases your risk of many different diseases. Health professionals say you should be exercising three to four times a week.

What does exercise mean to you? Is it being inside of the gym pushing around weights, or going on a run? Sometimes, life happens. What if you can't get in your gym session? Do you let yourself down and fall off of your fitness wagon and just go home to sit and feel bad about yourself? What if you are just not feeling 100 and are just finding excuses to not be in the gym? I get it- sometimes we can't make it to class or just "literally can't" fathom a workout. I can't even tell you how many times this has happened to me. Still does! 

Movement: MOVE - MENT, noun: An act of changing physical location or position or of having this changed.

Here's my thing. MOVE. What MOVES you? My favorite form of movement? DOG WALKING! Yes, I consider this movement as exercise. As long as you are moving throughout your day, you are good in my eyes! This even calls for standing at your desk instead of sitting. Or holding a plank during a commercial break on your favorite show. Even stretching or foam rolling as you binge watch Netflix. I'm not saying you will lose tons of weight by doing these every single day, but it sure is better than sitting on your ass and doing absolutely nothing all day. If you can't get into the gym or are in traffic and won't make it to class, have no fear, just MOVE. 

Here is how I move when I can't get in my regular exercise: 

  • Dog walking
  • Foam rolling
  • Core work
  • Glute bridges
  • Planks
  • Hiking
  • Bike rides
  • Animal flow

These are just a few moves that are great to do on your rest days too. Don't get so hung up on "needing" to get a pump in the gym. One missed day out of your recommended four won't make a huge difference, as long as you continue to move. Change your mindset. It'll change your life.
