It's Friday. You are getting ready to go out, getting dressed in front of your mirror, Beyonce is blasting in your speakers- HOLD UP- are those abs? Damn girl. You've been working hard and it is obviously showing. Tonight is your best friend's birthday and you're going to sushi and you are pumped. You love sushi! And, you just finished off a successful week of clean eating, spin classes, and hot yoga. YOU GO GIRL. Hair pump. It's Saturday morning and you are reflecting on your amazing night celebrating your bestie dancing the night away. Headache from the fizz, totally worth it. And that salmon nigiri? LIKE BUTTAH. You go on with your morning routine, getting ready for a shower and look- there's your scale, ready for your daily weigh in. Alright, here we go, you did great this week, so nothing to stress about. **calculating** OMG- scale is up TWO POUNDS. TWO POUNDS?! What the WHAT!?
Sound familiar? This isn't just you stressing over a few numbers. It's you, your coworker, it's the barista who just made your americano, heck, it's even been me. Why do we come up with these "ideal" numbers that will magically make us happy once we see it? Maybe these numbers are where we think we were at our happiest? Maybe it was your high school weight, or the weight you were before you had a baby. Whatever it is, it needs to stop, like- yesterday. These numbers on the scale do not define who we are as people. How do you feel in your own skin? Are you happy and confident? Do your clothes fit? Are you healthy and alive?!
Let's think about the factors that could have caused this "weight gain" that are completely out of your control. You could be retaining water because the sodium in the soy sauce of your amazingly delicious sushi meal you had the other night was high. But remember the salmon nigiri? LIKE BUTTAH. Yep, worth it. You didn't put the sodium in the soy sauce! When you eat meals high in salt, excess water is pulled into your cells, making you look puffy, feel bloated, and gain weight. You could have controlled this by skipping your best friend's dinner but let's be real, you're not missing out on events because of a little salt! Another factor, your hormones! Your monthly gift could be the reason of this shift in the numbers on the scale. You could see an overnight weight gain when you are ovulating, 48-72 hours before your period, and during your period. Oh, and remember that presentation that you have to do in your next meeting? The one you haven't prepared for that can make or break your career? HOLY STRESS. Your cortisol levels are out the roof- one of the main reasons us ladies gain weight. Thanks cortisol!
Let's take a focus on what we all can control. We can control the day to day items we put into our bodies, making sure they are well-balanced, clean meals. We can workout a few days a week and make sure we are making our bodies stronger, more flexible, and all around healthy. We can control our mind's twisted thoughts we have over the tiny bit of fat we found on our thighs, or the day dreams over having perfectly sculpted arms. Let's be grateful and thank our bodies for what they do for us. Those thighs that you think are fat? They are actually getting you up out of bed every day, taking you on runs that clear your head, or taking you on a Sunday morning stroll with your boyfriend. Those arms you wish were more sculpted? They are holding you up in a plank, carrying your toddler, and holding on tight to the ones you love.
Scales don't reveal fat loss. Weight loss could be water. Your muscle is more dense than fat, which is why a woman training hard isn't seeing the scale change much. She has built muscle. Strong, lean, hard-earned muscle. I challenge you to step away from your scale for a week, a month, I mean.. maybe get rid of it? I know people check so they "don't gain what they lost." But, haven't you adopted a healthy lifestyle that prevents that from happening? If you are on your journey of adopting a healthy lifestyle, maybe try to weigh yourself once a week, once a month, or every couple of months.
Our bodies are our temples, they do the most amazing things for us. Let us all take a step back and realize what makes our bodies OURS. I am so grateful to be alive, healthy, and extremely happy. Life is good. LOVE YOURSELF!
